Direct Checkout in “AI Mode” & Gemini

 

Shoppers can now move from research to purchase without visiting the retailer’s website.

The Change: Google is rolling out an embedded checkout feature in Search (AI Mode) and the Gemini app. Using saved credentials via Google Pay, users can buy products instantly while chatting with the AI.

“Business Agent”: Your New AI Sales Associate

 

Google is launching a branded AI assistant called Business Agent that lives on the Search results page.

The Change: It acts as a virtual sales associate that answers product-specific questions in the brand’s unique voice. It can suggest compatible accessories, explain substitutes, and eventually handle returns.

SEO Shift: Optimisation is moving toward AEO (Answer Engine Optimisation) by providing the structured data and “common question” answers that feed these agents.

 

“Direct Offers” in AI Mode

 

Google is piloting a new ad format that detects when a shopper is at a “high-intent” moment (ready to buy) but might be price-sensitive.

The Change: Retailers can trigger exclusive, contextual discounts (e.g., “20% off if you buy now”) directly within the AI chat interface.

Strategy: This allows brands to close the sale at the exact moment of decision-making, bypassing the traditional “add to cart and hope” funnel.

 

New “Agentic” Data Attributes in Merchant Center

 

To support this, Google is adding dozens of new data attributes to Merchant Center.

The Requirement: Retailers need to go beyond basic keywords. They now need to provide data on things like “compatible accessories,” “product substitutes,” and “FAQ-style” attributes.
